After a decade away, Xploding Plastix aka Jens Petter Nilsen and Hallvard Hagen are now very much back to their best and making thrilling and subversive sounds as they have always done. Early albums like their debut ‘Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents’ on Beatservice Records marked them out for fans and critics alike and showcased their brilliantly beguiling blend of off-grid beats, futuristic melodies and cinematic sounds. Later moving into designing music for film, TV and computer games they have recently returned to underground electronic music and now make their biggest and best statement yet with the majestic full-length ‘This Is Accurate’.

It is a 14-track whirlwind of emotions and rhythms that kicks off with the melancholic and sinewy ‘Starting At Undone’. ‘Average Agreeableness’ sounds like a fax machine in meltdown and ‘Cheese Paralysis’ is hyper-real dance-pop full of glistening surfaces and bright melodies. A similar future aesthetic defines the more introverted ‘The Bike Shed’ and ‘Knife Fight With Mark’ which takes you into a world of dark electronic jazz.

Elsewhere you can find mournful digital laments like ‘Two Nickels To Rub’ overlaid with what sounds like a hopeful oboe lead and the mesmeric synthesis of ‘Troubles Brought No Joy To Begin With’ which is another stunningly emotional electronic lullaby. Forlorn melodies and heavy-hearted broken beats continue through ‘When The Cockroach Lands’ while ‘Frugality Inertia’ is a busy flurry of spinning rhythms and fizzing pads, detuned synths and chaotic drums that coalesce into something joyous and ‘Treat It Like A Math Problem’ is a rousing orchestral manoeuvre made from malfunctioning electronic sound. Closer ‘Let’s Get Forgotten’ shows this pair can do heart-aching piano tenderness as well as electronic pandemonium.

‘This Is Accurate’ is another innovative and left-of-centre album from Xploding Plastix that once again marks them out as unique and maverick musical minds.

Jens Petter Nilsen and Hallvard Hagen first started making music together more than a quarter of a century ago. They are both based in Hønefoss and are inquisitive and creative minds who have cooked up charismatic and curious sounds based on out-of-the-ordinary beat science, analogue melodies and warm, organic, original rhythms. Their collision of genres gave rise to the now classic debut album ‘Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents’ on Beatservice Records in 2000, with a follow-up on Sony and a third on Beatservice. That was their last project some 13 years ago, since when they have been making music for films, radio and computer games. But now they are back with a new live show and upcoming album from which this single is taken.

The multi-layered ‘Average Agreeableness’ is a futuristic world of sound, a mish-mash of electro and disco, IDM and electronica. Every single part of the captivating track fizzes and bubbles restlessly, from the tumbling drums to the whirring synths, the distorted bass to the squealing machine sounds in meltdown.

‘Average Agreeableness’ shows Xploding Plastix have still got plenty of unusual ideas and more than enough studio skills to bring them all to life.

DJ, producer and club organiser Øivind ‘Kohib’ Sjøvoll has been in dazzling form of late. He has served up a series of mesmerising singles as a tantalising taster to his latest album, the third for Beatservice. Producing immaculately crafted sounds for over two decades, Kohib continues his deft aptitude for sculpting genre-defying compositions on the album, which hosts some of his most compelling material to date. From pitch black introspection to rousing dance floor abandon, it is every bit as far-reaching as we’ve come to expect from this singular talent.

‘Today’s Tales Of Tomorrow’ album bursts into life via the club-focused thrust of ‘Golden Skies’, featuring the seductive vocals of enigmatic songstress Lydia Waits, whose stirring performance shines like a beacon as it soars over Kohib’s slick four-four groove. Subtly shifting the mood is the heads-down throb of ‘It’s Never Late In Neon Signs’, where glistening arpeggios and snarling bass caress Waits’ honeyed vocal while ‘Fake Fur’ arrives with deliciously brooding intent and Larsen’s bewitching vocal gliding over immersive instrumentation and otherworldly textures. Next, ‘Hold That Thought’ mischievously switches the rhythm as thick sub bass and searing synth motifs power over broken drums. At the same time, Helle Larsen’s affecting vocal rises from delicate verse into dramatic chorus bursts.

The superb ‘Sandcastles’ sees Larsen’s emotive vocal weave seductive, lyrical metaphors through cinematic pads and live bass. The album’s title track sees sinister lead synth lines exploding over twisted bass as the pulsating rhythm drives the cut forward. The tempo rises rapidly with the pounding bass arpeggio of ‘This Kitty Got Claws’, purposefully marching through cascading synth textures, euphoric chords, and self-assured lead vocals. The utterly bewitching ‘Rhythm Cast A Spell On Me’ has another indelible Lydia Waits’ vocal providing a profoundly atmospheric moment, whilst the mystical melodies of ‘Not Supposed To Be’ echo over a misty woodland landscape with Lydia Waits’ vocal flowing over jagged synth textures. Finally, Helle Larsen returns with the sensual swansong ‘Let’s Stay Right Here’, a gorgeously heartfelt finale.

Vividly illustrating Kohib’s vast sonic repertoire, the potent and coherent ‘Today’s Tales Of Tomorrow’ album is also sure to enhance the Norwegian’s already glowing reputation.
