This release is the last of the individual artist offerings and precedes their debut collective album.

Beyonders is a collective of artists making experimental music from a wide range of genres. The label of the same name has introduced all the artists in the collective so far, J1Mi, NØS, and M4LA, save for Nick Grimes, aka GR1MES, Jolly Damper, and The Din, who debuts here. After this, all artists will collaborate on every release under the collective Beyonders alias.

GR1MES is a seasoned music maker with many strings to his bow and plenty of diverse releases under his belt across a range of aliases. He shows off his creative originality and vocals here on four tracks that come ahead of a full-length later in the year.

The superb ‘Flame’ (Ft Dekoi) kicks off with sultry vocals over deep, pulsing drums and organic guitar riffs. It’s an organic sound sprinkled with percussion and a sense of emotional longing that sounds like Bjork and The Knife meeting around a campfire. The fantastic ‘Atoms Of The Soul’ (Ft Dekoi) is more loose and playful with a flurry of acoustic guitar strings and languid drums. Rhythmic vocals ride the rhythm, and hypnotic harmonica brings a folky feel. The moody ‘Ferme’ is more direct and menacing with soaring synth strings and darker bass soundtracking a late night come down, and last of all ‘Ask and Receive’ twists dub, percussive grooves and warped synths into something paranoid, futuristic and unsettling.

Jason Goodings AKA Nøs has been making music for 30 years and has released his pioneering sounds as Hidden Agenda alongside his late brother Mark on the likes of Metalheadz, Reinforced and Fabio’s Creative Source. Later, he continued to innovate on Defunked, A-Side’s Eastside and returned to Metalheadz and Reinforced and dropped his ‘Whatever Happened to…’ album on Swiss imprint Straight Ahead. Now part of the collaborative project Beyonders, he continues to distil his vast array of experiences into more beautiful music that breaks free of genre restrain, as was always the idea with Beyonders, which first came about as a concept in the late 90s.

“But life got in the way of a full realisation of that”, says Jason Goodings. “Fast forward to today, and I am so excited to see things taking shape beyond my wildest expectations. The ‘Cantilever’ EP marks a watershed moment for me personally, encapsulating all that I could imagine, undefinable, stepping beyond boldly into the future.”

‘Cantilever’ opens with a lilting halftime rhythm scattered with drum hits and run through with sonorous synths and lush downtempo vocals. It’s an alluring late-night world of intimate sound before ‘The Secret’ stays in jazz lounge territory. This one has shuffling drums and moody trumpet motifs floating above intimate vocal whispers to make for a bluesy mood full of soul. The brilliant ‘Homecrawl’ melts the heart with liquid chords and sustained synths brought to life by cosmic leads and loose drum tumbles. ‘Eden’ completes a blissful EP with busy broken beats and freeform melodies that rise and fall with persuasive, ever more compelling energy and percussive business.

This excellent, impossible-to-define ‘Cantilever’ EP is a new musical high watermark for Nøs in a career full of them.
