Both became well established DJs and promoters in ...]]> Belfast based Analytic Records is presenting its eighth release, the ‘Intrusive Thoughts’ EP from Acid Cats.

Originally heralding from Portsmouth, England, the production duo Acid House of Richie Collins and James Harrison have been around the house and techno scene from its early inception of the late 80’s. Both became well established DJs and promoters in the city and its surrounding area. James ran a specialist record shop and Richie was promoting an event called Sunday Sessions, this is how they first met. A lifelong friendship was born. James had been tinkering with production while at university and got his break with Leftfield’s now highly desirable Offshoot imprint. Recording as Sub funk, James found his way into the record boxes of Laurent Garnier, Mr C and Billy Nasty. Meanwhile Richie continued to DJ regularly for various events and pirate radio stations such as; Point-Blank FM. After a while James hooked back up with Richie in 2021 and the pair immediately gelled like never before. James converted Richie to Reason so the pair could work remotely but were meeting most weekends to finish tracks off. They formed Acid Cats, a heavily 303 influenced sound with a modern take. Their first release came on Household Digital and a stack full of tracks are in the offing. The duo is looking to establish a live act in 2022.

Acid house and techno EP ‘Intrusive Thoughts’ consists of four tracks, ‘Intrusive Thoughts’, ‘Gutter Trash’, ‘Diode’ and ‘Two Up Front’.

We are presenting the opening track ‘Intrusive Thoughts’ featuring Miss C. You are dropped straight into bubbly percussion with that distinct warehouse vibe. Miss C’s vocals swell into the listening space beckoning in listeners before a relentless stomping bassline drives the track further through its progression. Eerie synth stabs & shuffling hats continue to push the energy forward before the track crescendos prior to the breakdown. This strips the track down nicely to arrange a new build before (you guessed it) filthy acid patterns progress shifting it up gear after gear as the filter sweeps out and the resonance gets filthier and filthier. Intrusive Thoughts is very much a track which is what it says on the tin.

On the ‘Sexy Dreams’ EP, Your Planet Is Next gives analogue acid house in full swing, warns you about the dangers of partying, rolls out fonky piano chords, rides on the water surface while expressing his desire to get freaky with a sexy dance floor creature.

Arvid Wretman aka Your Planet Is Next surfaced in 2014 with a limited edition cassette tape. A favourite reoccurring format suiting his musical style perfectly – dirty, quirky and analogue, heavily acid-infused and almost always lined with Wretman’s signature characteristic dry vocals, full of humor yet often sprung out of deep contemplating.

Your Planet Is Next is without a doubt a live artist and all of the above-mentioned elements are part of his shows. Wretman brings his most favoured gear, and with the help of a mic he delivers ironic deadpan words of truth and love on top of his extremely catchy oddball house – do not forget this is the guy who did a cover of Cher’s ‘Believe’. What could suit an artist better who feels most comfortable describing himself as “a failed pop star”?

Wretman also produces under the moniker Sexazoid and belongs to the two duos Excellent Security and Osynlig Fetma.

‘Sexy Dreams’ EP consists of four original tracks, ‘Acid House Party’, ‘Drop The Midrange’, ‘Sexy Dreams’, ‘Feel The Rhythm’, ‘Water Acid’, and an instrumental version of the title track.

A DJ, producer, songwriter and composer, the ...]]> Black Light Smoke returns to his Death Decay Magic imprint alongside Léah Lazonick for ‘Work’, backed by remixes from Happy707 and Dina Summer.

A Chicago native now based in New York, Jordan Lieb, aka Black Light Smoke, is an artist who wears many stripes within the realms electronic music. A DJ, producer, songwriter and composer, the diverse talent has also added the title of label boss to his resumé in recent years having founded his imprint, Death Decay Magic. Launched in 2020, releasing material spanning techno, EBM, electro and beyond, the label has welcomed releases and remixes from artists such as Cardopusher, The Hacker and MAN 2.0, to name just a few. Returning for his second EP on the label, mid-June sees Lieb partner alongside Brooklyn-based vocalist and producer Léah Lazonick for ‘Work’, accompanied by remixes from Argentinian duo Happy707 and trio Dina Summer – a collective made up of Kalipo and Local Suicide.

A playful electro cut fusing bright synths and crunchy percussion with Lazonick’s hypnotic vocals, title track ‘Work’ opens the package in impressive fashion, with the ‘Street Mix’ adding commanding leads and sweeping melodies throughout. Next, ‘Girls Dance With Computer’ jumps back into the mix with further warped vocals amongst resonant synths, while final original ‘Overdrive’ builds around funk-fuelled bass licks, echoed samples and infectious cowbells. Remixing the title cut, Happy707 takes things down on a darker, cosmic-driven journey across five minutes, before Dina Summer’s take on ‘Girls Dance With Computer’ brings a slice of Italo in the midst of a trippy and chuggy closing production.
