PREMIERE: Funk Cabal – Smothered

The Funk Cabal duo unveils their ‘Open Up’ EP—a bold fusion of hard-hitting electro-funk, cinematic textures, and art-rock sensibilities. The release features four original tracks and a remix by Mitch, and will be available via their own Glasgow-based label, Tremors.

Channelling the deep grooves of Kerri Chandler, the atmospheric tension of Massive Attack, and the poetic urgency of Gil Scott-Heron, Funk Cabal’s sound is a masterclass in contrast – where gritty analogue beats collide with ethereal synth backed landscapes. Smoky, introspective vocals intertwine with pulsing club energy in a mesmerising collection of ideas. Echoes of sly romanticism and widescreen synth work add depth to their palette, creating something absolutely timeless.

‘Open Up’ EP covers a lot of ground, humanist themes intertwine throughout with snapshots from life. The easy appeal of the record is plain to see, each track—’Open Up’, ‘Parasolia’, ‘I Think I’ve Lost My Way’, ‘Smothered’, and ‘Open Up’ (Mitch’s Paris Mix)—pulls in a different direction and the vocal work keeps its momentum as you listen. Within the tight EP format, it is unafraid to flip the script, transitioning from rolling Italo arpeggios to laid back broken breaks at the drop of a hat, all this gives the record a freshness that is rare.

“Coming from different ends of the musical spectrum really made us push each other in the writing process. We wanted to explore life from different angles in these songs, but whether through the lens of inner city living or dark sunglasses on a club med like getaway, there’s a bittersweet lyrical dissonance throughout.” – Funk Cabala

We are presenting the fourth track ‘Smothered’.
